    Also known as Tamoxifen, Nolvadex is a medication used in the treatment of breast cancer that has metastasized to other parts of the body. It also treats other types of cancer after surgery and radiation therapy. It is also used to reduce the risk of breast cancer in high risk patients. It blocks the growth of breast cancer by interfering with effects of estrogen in the breast tissues.

    It is to be taken orally with or without food.
    Take Nolvadex once or twice a day for about 5 years or as instructed by your doctor.
    The daily dose is 20mg that is usually divided into to two and taken twice a day in the morning and evening.
    If using the liquid version, measure as directed using a special measuring spoon or cap, do not use household spoons as they are not calibrated.
    The dosage is dependent on a person’s therapy response and medical condition.
    Take the dosage at the same time each day.

    The drug should be stored in a tight container away from moisture, heat or light.
    Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
    Do not refrigerate the liquid. Discard unused content after three months.

    Common symptoms of using Nolvadex are increased bone and cancer pain, increase in the disease. This is a good sign the medication is working well for you. These include increased tumor size and even new tumor developments. These however disappear quickly but if they don’t, call your doctor.
    Others are muscles aches, headache, nausea, hair thinning, leg cramps, hot flashes, numb or tingling skin and a loss of sexual desire in men may occur. Some people may experience vision changes like blurred vision, eye pain, unusual tiredness, easy bruising and bleeding, abdominal pain, dark urine, persistent sore throat, yellowing eyes and skin, swelling of ankles and mood changes. Call your doctor in case you experience these.
    In the case of allergic reaction immediately visit the emergency room if they persist. These include severe dizziness, swelling of the throat, tongue and face, trouble breathing and itching.

    Since it can be absorbed through the skin and lungs, pregnant women should not handle it as it may harm the development of the fetus.
    Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of the drug.
    If you have a history of blood clots or any condition requiring treatment with blood thinners like warfarin then tell your doctor before you start treatment.
    A history of breast cancer and stroke or blood clot may prevent you from using this medication.
    Your doctor should know about your medical history like high cholesterol, limited ability to walk, high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, cataracts and smoking.
    Consult your doctor before commencing treatment with Nolvadex when you are breastfeeding as it is not known if it passes into breast milk. This may cause harm to your developing baby.
    Due to drug interaction, this medication should not be used with certain drugs.
    Tell your doctor if you are using blood thinners, anastrozole, letrozole, hormonal forms of birth control, antidepressants, phenobarbitals  and rifamycins like rifampin.
    Tell your doctor about all the medication you are currently taking, this includes the prescription drugs, over the counter medication and herbal alternatives.
